The India Stack comprises digital layers built on the top of e-KYC, Digital Locket, e-Sign, and Unified Payment Interface. Together, the government developed a robust end-to-end digital structure to promote cashless, paperless and presence-less systems. Besides, the government has managed to create this user base of billion people on open API, thereby allowing developers and organizations to build and launch a strong foundation for India Stack.

The government in India started digitalizing India with the ICT-based systems, helping the government implement and control the programs for more than a decade. But over time, the system has evolved with the latest technologies. Initially, when the digital India program was started, client-server systems were used. The government soon realized that it has some challenges because the server needs to be installed and maintained. Over time, things changed, and the government started using web-based systems, and gradually they shifted to cloud-based systems. The cloud-based system offers many benefits, including stable connectivity, which is an important factor for the success of centralized systems.
The government has developed a centralized system using the cloud-based systems, and it helped them build national-level registries and databases that offered many advantages to India’s citizens and government. Today, India has a variety of national registries like the driver’s licenses, public distribution beneficiaries, and national vehicle and health registries.
